Orioles Place Jonathan Schoop On DL With Oblique Strain

Engelb Vielma was added to the 25-man roster a few days ago for further infield depth, so the O's could get by with Valencia and Vielma filling in for Schoop on a short-term basis.

Schoop suffered the injury last night during a swinging strikeout, and was removed from the game in the seventh inning. Manager Buck Showalter said Schoop injured his oblique in his last at-bat in Friday's loss. The O's will use Tim Beckham at second base and Danny Valencia at third while Schoop is out.

Over the long term, of course, Schoop's absence is a big loss for an Orioles lineup that has had a lot of problems generating offense. "It's honestly the most comfortable I've felt being in this locker room, somewhere I'm familiar with, in the clubhouse around guys that I know". When the Orioles headed north in late-March, the 30-year-old hung back in Florida to get his work in before joining their Double-A affiliate earlier this week for some final fine-tuning.

Schoop was off to a slow start in 2018 with a.230/.266/.344 slash line and one home run in 14 games. Over parts of six seasons in the majors, all of them coming with Tampa Bay, Cobb owns a 3.50 ERA (111 ERA+) across 115 starts.
