More specifically it was the unmistakable sound of a Honda engine; McLaren's regression has gone hand in hand with Honda's reliability issues.

"The MCL33 represents a fresh chapter for McLaren - one that clearly embraces our evocative history while also serving to guide our future", said Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, the McLaren Group executive chairman and executive committee principal.

As last year's model is concerned, the MCL 33 is nearly the same, but the car is steeply raked, with a high rear end and a nose- down situation in the front.

"Finally the day arrives, the engine is running, the car is running, we're all happy. I know just how important this car is to the team, and I just hope that it delivers in the way we all want it to".

The team's prized driver, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, expressed his belief in the new car.

"I think the whole team feels proud of this car", Boullier said at the launch of the MCL33.

"If we're able to develop the key strengths of last year's chassis and marry it to an improved Renault power unit, then I think we'll be able to take a step forwards".

The new papaya orange and blue colour scheme on the 2018 season F1 car draws inspiration from McLaren's early F1 cars.

However, their switch to Renault power has Alonso hoping for that this season they can at least play a role in the fight.

And the new McLaren is a successor to the MCL32 chassis which the team believed would have been a frontrunner in 2017 but for the crippling lack of power provided by its unreliable Honda units.

With little change in the regulations beyond the advent of the halo, the MCL33 evolves last year's MCL32. McLaren have not won a grand prix since 2012 and finished last season ninth of the 10 teams.

'Much of the work on the MCL33 has been around optimising the packaging of the new Renault engine, and the incorporation of the new halo device, ' the team confirmed.

The car was then officially unveiled by McLaren ahead of a filming day in Spain.

"It felt great. It's always a special moment when you drive the car for the first time. After a couple of years of not fighting for the championship, it's time to come back to that position".

"The McLaren team was created by a brave pioneer, and has had bravery at its core ever since", Zak Brown, the team's American executive director said.
