Under the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, worksite enforcement typically consisted of high-profile raids on companies committing egregious violations of labor and immigration law.

A spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that stores in Baltimore, Glen Burnie, Severna Park, Pasadena, Landover, Upper Marlboro and Frederick were part of the raid that also took place in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

The operation was desrcibed by ICE agents as a follow-up from a 2013 investigation that resulted in the arrests of nine 7-Eleven franchise owners and managers in New York and Virginia. According to ICE, the agency arrested 21 people suspected of being in the United States illegally during the sweep, but no one from North Texas. Administrative fines are discounted by some as a business cost.

The Department of Homeland Security and especially Immigration and Customs Enforcement have ramped up their activities in the first year of the Trump administration. In 2008, agents arrived by helicopter at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa, and detained nearly 400 workers.

The names of those in custody were not immediately released. However, Trump's operation will focus on arresting employers because they allegedly attract other people to immigrate illegally.

7-Eleven confirmed the raids to Salon, explaining that 7-Eleven franchisees are independent business owners, thus the franchisees are responsible for who they hire and their eligibility.

Five 7-Eleven stores operate in the Waco area. Of the four local stores that were a part of the raid, no arrests were reported in Central Florida.

Earlier this week, the government removed special protected status for about 200,000 Salvadoran immigrants living in the United States for at least 17 years, giving them 18 months to leave the country unless Congress says otherwise. Agents told arriving customers that the store was closed briefly for a federal inspection. A driver delivering cases of beer was told to wait in the parking lot. The stores were among 98 nationwide targeted by ICE on Wednesday. A federal inspection was underway, they said.
