Samsung unveils its mid-range Exynos 7872 SoC

With large improvements in CPU, GPU, LTE modem, an ISP, the Exynos 7872 will change and improve the current perception of the mid-range devices. It packs two high-performance Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.0GHz for demanding tasks and four quad-core Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz for power efficiency. Samsung says, combining the information from RGB and monochrome camera, the Exynos 7872 can create an out-focus effect to make photographs more visually appealing. The Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor also includes LTE modem that can support up to two carriers with highest downlink and uplink speeds of 300Mbps and 150Mbps respectively.

The Meizu M6s also offers a side-mounted fingerprint scanner (ala Sony), 3GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB storage, a 3000mAh battery, a 5.7-inch 1440x720p display (18:9) and USB Type-C connectivity.

Aside from Samsung, there aren't a lot of companies that like to use Exynos processors developed and manufactured by the chaebol, as Qualcomm maintains its dominance over the mobile industry, while MediaTek is often the go-to budget-friendly option, especially for Chinese smartphone vendors. With the new SoC, Samsung has stated the desire to bring mid-range smartphones closer to the premium end of the Android smartphone spectrum.

The phone features an 18:9 display on a full metal body, along with the same U shaped nano injection antenna design that we have seen on flagship grade smartphones. It also allows 1080p video recording at 120fps, HEVC and H.264 codec support, iris camera support for authentication, up to 21.7MP rear and front cameras.

As per Samsung, the processor has a hardware block for Smart WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) that can generate a WDR image with just a single shot. As far as the memory is concerned, onboard is LPDDR3 of RAM, alongside eMMC 5.1 for built-in storage and the SD 3.0 for expandable storage via the normally used microSD cards. The chipset also supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and FM Radio.
