Peace hopes up in Korea talks

During last week's phone conversation, Moon and Trump agreed not to conduct the springtime South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises during the South Korea-hosted Winter Olympics period.

North Korea has expressed its interests in attending the Winter Olympics, in February which marks an important moment of possible rapprochement between the two Koreas after a year of tensions triggered by Pyongyang's continuous weapons tests and the US President's aggressive remarks towards the regime.

China has not done enough on the issue of North Korea for the US, President Donald Trump has said but appreciated the "great chemistry" he shares with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In December, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said North Korea wants to engage in a direct dialog with the U.S. to assure its security, adding that Russia could help with these talks. Instead, he made nice about the discussions planned between north and south Korea.

"We have certainly problems with North Korea", Trump said at a news conference.

North Korean delegations to its neighbour are chosen carefully by Pyongyang and their movements are tightly controlled in the South.

"I see North Korea's participation in the Pyeongchang Games will provide us with a chance to reduce tension on the Korean Peninsula", said Cho, whose official title is unification minister. It would also ease the fears that nearby countries like Japan, China, and the Philippines have over North Korea's growing nuclear capabilities.

The White House announced Wednesday that Pence and his wife, Karen Pence, will lead the US delegation at the Olympics.

"Who knows where it leads?"

The Russian leader said, during a meeting with heads of Russian print media and news agencies, that Kim was already a "shrewd and mature politician" and that the North Korean had "obviously won this round", referring to the latest political and diplomatic developments on the Korean Peninsula.

It also threatens to side-swipe next week's Vancouver summit on North Korea, a summit jointly hosted by the US and Canada.

The US has cautiously welcomed the talks, but warned that the North's invitation to the Games must not undermine global efforts to isolate Kim's regime.

"All our cutting-edge weapons, including our hydrogen bomb and intercontinental ballistic missiles, are not targeting our Korean brothers, China or Russian Federation but the United States", Ri said, according to pool reports from inside the room.

Trump and Kim traded bellicose rhetoric and crude insults a year ago, as North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear detonation and three tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Kang stressed the position of South Korea that her country will push simultaneously for improved inter-Korean ties and the peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. Moon welcomed Kim's outreach and proposed the talks at Panmunjom.
