Why LA is Still the Favorite to Trade for Stanton — Dodgers

The new Derek Jeter-led ownership regime in Miami has spent the past five weeks trying to move Stanton, who has a guaranteed $295 million left on his contract.

Trade rumors flared up against Friday when a report emerge that the Miami Marlins outfielder released a list of four teams he's be willing to waive his no-trade clause for. (The Astros and Cubs remain in the mix, albeit behind the Yankees and Dodgers.) Stanton's refusal to go to St. Louis wasn't a hypothetical one, according to the Cardinals. He has reportedly expressed interest in playing for a contender in a coastal city.

MLB Network's Jon Morosi says the Dodgers have always been interested in Stanton, but only at a certain price.

A tough break for Stanton, as he'll miss out on playing for the Cardinals and will have to settle for a better team in a better city.

Although Stanton's full no-trade clause allows him to veto any trade offer, the Miami Marlins have reportedly only accepted offers with the Cardinals and Giants. Stanton might be holding out for the Dodgers, he might be deciding between the Giants and Cardinals, he might be spending every evening watching all seven Star Wars movies before The Last Jedi comes out in eight days and doesn't want to be bothered.

The Marlins made their first major trade on Thursday, moving two-time All-Star Dee Gordon to the Mariners for three prospects - right-handers Nick Neidert and Robert Dugger and infielder Christopher Torres. Oh, by the way, the Blue Jays still have Troy Tulowitzki signed at shortstop through 2020 with a team option for 2021.

They'd also very likely try to drive a hard bargain with the Marlins.

Bottom line, Yankee people and other execs believe that Stanton eventually will force his way to Los Angeles, which seems to be his preferred destination. Donaldson would be a perfect fit for the Cardinals and, frankly, it wouldn't be shocking to see the Cardinals pursue him even if they do end up with Stanton. Signing big free agents like Martinez is not the Cardinals' style, though, particularly when Boston and other big-market teams are likely to get involved. If the Blue Jays show any willingness to deal, the Cardinals will not stop calling them.

This is the spot Jeter inherited. "He's got a home there, clearly has some ties to LA, so really it's his call as to ultimately what he wants to do". "When there is a need to make a statement, we'll make a statement".
