US asks Israel to restrain response to Jerusalem move

The U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital is against international conventions and U.N. decisions, and will amount to a "grave mistake", Turkish Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said on Dec. 6.

"For 50 years were are under Israeli occupation", Abu Khalaf said, referring to Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem - along with its capture of the West Bank and Gaza Strip - as part of the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.

Jordanian citizens protested the decision on Wednesday, chanting Anti-American slogans, calling the authorities to abolish peace treaties with Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Israel's "irreplaceable" relationship with the United States in his first public remarks after the Trump administration said it would move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, but he did not address the move directly and instead stressed the threat of Iran. But many of his counterparts expressed concern over the U.S.'s position on Israel.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman warned his close ally that moving the US embassy was a "dangerous step" that could rile Muslims around the world. Israeli police and military are also preparing for demonstrations near the American embassy in Tel Aviv.

"This act is not going to bring peace", Bukhari said. Trump will still sign the waiver, officials said, because there is no immediate timeline for when the embassy relocation will take place and the law requires cuts to State Department funding if the deadline lapses.

In Australia, curious tourists are often shocked to find Sydney is not actually the capital city, and usually told the inland city of Canberra was built as the "bush capital" as a compromise somewhere between Australia's largest city and its competitor to the south, Melbourne.

Jordan and the Palestinians requested an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers, meanwhile, to discuss Mr. Trump's plans.

But Trump appears set on fulfilling his campaign promise, regardless of the regional consequences.

In a speech in Washington, Trump said he had decided to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the US embassy to the city.

The European Union's top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, also said it would damage peace talks, and senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said last year that the move would mean "the destruction of the peace process as a whole".

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing for violence after Hamas called for a "day of rage" in response to Trump's controversial decision.

An inbuilt waiver has been repeatedly invoked by successive US presidents, postponing the move on grounds of "national security" once every six months, meaning the law has never taken effect.

"I've judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians".

The Palestinian Islamist political organization and militant group urged "the youth and the Palestinian resistance in the West Bank" to "respond with all means available to the US decision that harms our Jerusalem". Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the nationalist Jewish Home party, praised what he called Trump's "bold and yet natural" move.

The status of Jerusalem is a critical issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides claiming the city as their capital. "I will do everything in my power to support the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to return to meaningful negotiations".

The state TV's website quoted Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as saying that "the victory will ultimately be for the Islamic nation and Palestine".
