National Hockey League to consider Seattle expansion application

National Hockey League to consider Seattle expansion application

The NHL wants a franchise in Seattle and has for some time.

"Weve agreed as a league to take and consider an expansion application, and to let them run in the next few months a season-ticket drive", Bettman said.

Seattle plans to have a new arena ready by 2020 with the intent of luring National Hockey League and NBA teams as anchor tenants. Roughly $600 million has been allocated to help attempt bring the professional sports scene in the city back, with the possibility of regaining an National Basketball Association franchise having been no secret as to their desires.

The NHL is working to invent revolutionary on-ice player-tracking technology it hopes to implement for the 2019-20 season or, potentially, as early as the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday.

Bettman said the franchise fee to move a time to Seattle is set at $650 million United States dollars. This last season the National Hockey League opened an expansion team in Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Bettman said hockey-related revenue will be around US$4.54 billion this season, an 8.2 per cent increase. Bettman boasted that "The league has never been healthier".

That decision directly influenced Bettman's decision to allow an expansion team in Seattle. While a potential relocation of an existing franchise or franchises has not been ruled out, the NHL's announcement now provides a road map for Seattle to obtain a team in the coming years. This news comes a mere four days after the Seattle City Council approved a $660 million renovation of Key Arena.

"There is nothing going on right now with Houston", Bettman said, according to ESPN's Emily Kaplan. Seattle's fee to enter the league is $650 million.

KeyArena housed the NBA's SuperSonics until they relocated to Oklahoma City ahead of the 2008-09 season.

This process is exclusive to Seattle, so other markets-including Quebec City-are not in the mix. "If I wanted to be positive, I'd say one of the things we kept harping on is we need another team in the (Western Conference) before we consider expanding in the East". (Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the fee is different because of the market and because of inflation.) Basically, this is the same process that prefigured the Vegas Golden Knights' birth, and barring anything unexpected, this feels inevitable.

"We learned that we can get the technology to work but we needed it to work better so that it could be scalable", Commissioner Bettman said. "As I think everybody knows, the club has stopped the pursuit of a new arena because they think it's futile", he said. This statement is backed up by a clause in the agreement in which new owners can not apply for relocation for seven years. "But we've got homework to do". "We want to work together". "So, it certainly shows there's a larger universe of options in getting this kind of infrastructure built perhaps than what we've been exposed to".
