Fast-Moving Brush Fire Threatens Santa Paula, Ventura

The blaze broke out Monday and grew wildly to more than 15 square miles in the hours that followed, consuming vegetation that hasn't burned in decades, Ventura County Fire Sgt. Eric Buschow said.

Weather Service meteorologist John Dumas tells the Times that the strongest winds will whip up around 10 p.m. The Weather Service expects the peak of the Santa Anas to be tonight and Tuesday, when winds could gust between 50 and 70 miles per hour in LA and Ventura counties.

The evacuation centers are located at Ventura County Fairgrounds at Miners Building - 10 W Harbor Blvd, Ventura, CA 93001 and Nordhoff High School - 1401 Maricopa Hwy, Ojai, CA 93023. The wind carried thick, black smoke for miles, and fire engines were seen parked along a densely populated area very close to the blaze.

The Ventura County Fire Department tweeted that the fire was moving at a rapid rate of spread and was burning in steep terrain with 25 to 30 mph winds.
