Trump Picks Former Eli Lilly Drug Executive as Health Secretary

Former U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Alex Azar was nominated by President Donald Trump Monday to lead the department as secretary, a post left vacant by the departure of Tom Price in September.

The HHS is responsible for advising the President on matters of health, welfare, and income security programmes. 'He will be a star for better healthcare and lower drug prices!'

"Happy to announce, I am nominating Alex Azar to be the next HHS Secretary".

Azar previously worked at the department as deputy secretary under President George W. Bush before joining the pharmaceutical industry. Ron Wyden (OR), for instance, spoke for many of his colleagues when he wondered how Azar could faithfully work to bring down prescription drug prices given his former employment.

As secretary, Azar may be called upon to alter certain parts of Obamacare.

If confirmed, Azar will take over the administration's management of the Affordable Care Act.

It also oversees health insurance programmes, including Medicare and Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.

The nomination comes two months after former HHS Secretary Tom Price resigned due to a private plane scandal.

"It would be unrealistic to expect a reformer from Trump, but a professional apologist for this abusive industry is an insult to us all".

President Donald Trump on Monday nominated former pharmaceutical executive Alex Azar to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a vacancy left by ousted chief Tom Price. Azar must be approved by the Senate.

The Trump administration followed through on a threat to cut off billions of dollars of subsidy payments to insurers, shortened the Obamacare open enrollment period, slashed advertising for the program by 90 percent and cut funding to groups that help people sign up for health insurance.
