RB Leipzig End Liverpool's Hopes of Early Naby Keita Move

The deal is reportedly worth 51.9 million euros ($62 million, 45.8 million pounds) and there had been speculation RB Leipzig could let Keita join Liverpool early, during the Bundesliga's winter break in January.

But Rangnick is adamant that no such situation will be sanctioned by Leipzig, who themselves feel Keita is crucial to their own targets.

"We want to qualify for Europe again, and we need Naby for that".

"Even if we should not reach the knockout stages of Champions League, it would make no sense to allow Naby to join Liverpool earlier", he told Leipziger Volkszeitung. And with Leipzig flirting with last place in Group G, lately that talk has seemed increasingly plausible.

Take Keïta out of the mix and they could go from the favourites to quality they currently are to mere contenders, one of many sides with a shot at doing so.

Since his deferred transfer to Liverpool was confirmed, Keita has endured something of a ragged three months, picking up three red cards (at club and international level) as well as finding himself at the centre of a police penalty order for twice trying to use a counterfeit Guinean driving license to procure a real German one.

Following their impressive maiden season in the Bundesliga, in which RB Leipzig finished ahead of Borussia Dortmund, the Red Bulls will be desperate to make sure their Champions League status continues next season.
