A suicide attack claimed by the Islamic State (IS ) group in the diplomatic district of Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, has caused multiple casualties.

Wahid Mujro, spokesman for the Health Ministry, says 15 people were wounded in Tuesday's blast, which took place in an area of the city called Wazir Akbar Khan that houses diplomatic missions, embassies and global non-government organizations.

Earlier local media reports had suggested the attack targeted the Australian embassy, which is also in the same area.

The attack struck the heart of the city's diplomatic area, where many embassies and the head offices of major global organisations are located.

Kabul has been hit by a number of terrorist attacks in the recent months, mostly claimed by the Islamic State and the Taliban.
