Crystal Palace midfielder Sako: Sakho will be massive for us

Crystal Palace midfielder Sako: Sakho will be massive for us

That's the view of Reds legend Phil Thompson.

Former France defender William Gallas says it is "a shame" that Liverpool offloaded Mamadou Sakho this summer.

The north west side have come under fire from a number of critics so far this term surrounding their defensive capabilities, which has seen them ship 11 goals so far this season in six Premier League games - a record only worsened by three other teams.

The 27-year-old was sent out on loan to Palace for the second-half of last season and impressed as the Eagles avoided relegation, eventually finishing 14th.

"Liverpool's best defender at the start of the season has been allowed to leave", the former centre-back told Sky Sports. "It is a new start for everyone with the new manager and we are all going to try our best". He was a warrior, a fighter and a battler and you saw it at Crystal Palace last season.

"I would like to think he's building a side now".

But Thompson, who won seven First Division titles on Merseyside, believes Klopp is still the right man for the job... because nobody else would be able to come in and replace him. I know there's fallouts in football all the time but somewhere along the line you can't cut off your nose to spite your face. "He should've banned him but then brought him back into the fold".

The Reds finally parted ways permanently with Sakho, who joined Crystal Palace in a £26m move late in the transfer window.

Thompson added: "They lost out on Virgil van Dijk for whatever reason but when it happened they should have kept Sakho".

"There shouldn't be any debate about his position at Liverpool".
